Sepideh Mehraban’s ‘Arrival’ acts as a continuation of her most recent body of work which addresses the parallels between the 1979 Iranian Revolution and current political trends. Using paint to obfuscate and veil the archival Persian newsprint, Mehraban plays with the legibility of the text as a means to interrogate the manners in which history is presented and its implications. ‘Arrival’ is the second work in the Bad Paper Poster series.

Sepideh Mehraban is an Iranian-born artist, working and living in Cape Town. She obtained her BA and MA from Alzahara University (Tehran, Iran) in 2009 and 2011 respectively before being awarded a postgraduate degree from Michaelis School of Fine Art (Cape Town, South Africa) in 2012. Mehraban’s work explores memory and landscape, looking at the overlaying and veiling of paint as a means of expressing layers of existence and experience. Both her academic work and personal projects are sensitive towards the recent history of Iran, which Mehraban incorporates through text, figurative works, and abstraction, often drawing on the grid format of newsprint as a source of inspiration. Recent exhibitions include Cape to Tehran, Gallery MOMO (Cape Town, 2018), SS17, Gallery Momo (Cape Town, 2017), Distill Motion, SMITH Studios (Cape Town, 2017), A Painting Today, Stevenson Gallery (Cape Town, 2017), Charting, Eclectica Contemporary (Cape Town, 2016), and Imago Mundi, Fondazione Giorgio Cini (Venice, 2015). Mehraban’s works are held in both private and public collections in Iran and South Africa, including Alzahara University (Tehran), Spier Art’s Trust (Cape Town), University of Cape Town, and Thulamela Chambers (Johannesburg).
Mehraban currently holds a teaching position at Stellenbosch University, and lives and works in Cape Town.
