Bronwyn Katz (b.1993, Kimberley, South Africa) graduated with a BFA from the Michaelis School of Art in 2015, where she was awarded the Simon Gerson Prize. Katz’s oeuvre incorporates sculpture, installation, video and performance to engage with the concept of land as a repository of memory. Through these mediums, Katz reflects on the notion of place or space as lived experience and the ability of land to remember and communicate the memory of its occupation. Her wall-based sculptures work with found components from discarded bed-springs and continue her exploration into charting existing, imagined, and remembered spaces through material objects. Additionally, Katz was a co-founding member of 11-women artist collective iQhiya, who have performed internationally at Documenta (Kassel and Athens) as well as locally at Iziko South African National Gallery and Greatmore Studios (Cape Town). Recent exhibitions include A Silent Line, Lives Here, Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2018), Not A Single Story, Nirox Foundation (Johannesburg, 2018), Sculpture, Institute of Contemporary Art Indian Ocean (Port Louis, Mauritius, 2018), Tell Freedom, Kunsthal KAdE (Amersvoort, Netherlands, 2018), Le jour qui vient, Galerie des Galeries (Paris, 2017), the 12th Dak’Art Biennale (Senegal, 2016), and The Quiet Violence of Dreams, Stevenson Gallery (Johannesburg, 2016). Katz lives and works between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
