Barend de Wet was born in 1956 in Boksburg, South Africa. He completed his education at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 1990. He went on to receive the Volkskas Atelier Award and attended the Residency Cite Internationale des Arts, in France. Notable solo exhibitions include Black, White and Everything In-Between (2016) and Maximalism (2013) at SMAC Gallery, Cape Town; A Tangled Skin (2012), Cape Town Art Fair, Cape Town; Pre Green (2010) at NIROX Foundation Project Space, Johannesburg; and White Elephants (2008) at Blank Projects, Cape Town.
Group shows include Women’s Work (2016) at the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town; Upstart/Startup (2016) at SMAC Gallery, Johannesburg; The Film Will Always Be You – Exhibition Histories of South African Artists’ Film and Performance (2015) at TATE Modern, London; Thinking, Feeling, Head, Heart (2014) at New Church Museum, Cape Town; AFTER THE RAINBOW NATION: An Exhibition of Contemporary South African Sculpture (2013) at NIROX Sculpture Park, Johannesburg; and The Rainbow Nation: Hedendaagse Beeldhouwkunst uit Zuid-Afrika (2012) at Museum Beelden aan Zee, Netherlands.
